Nick parked his yellow Jaguar in the Square. He took the wheelchair out of the boot and unfolded it by the front passenger door. He was dressed only in his deerstalker, his overcoat and sockless brown brogues. His bare legs were pale and hairy. He helped Pax struggle into the chair, piled wet clothes in his lap, and trundled him up the Brownsâ drive to the front door. Thea looked smug when she brought them hot coffee to go with the brandies they nursed. They sat side by side on the sofa. Pax ached with the exertions of the morning. Nick sat disconsolate with a blanket over his shoulders, still wearing the deerstalker, a large plaster covering the wound between his eyes. They sipped their drinks and stared morosely into the middle distance, sale survivors of a natural disaster.
Pax explained. He described in detail Nickâs perfect backflip into the murky waters of Saint Katherineâs Dock. There was not much of a splash because of his classic entry into the water, feet following head. It was more of a heavy plop followed by a column of water rising in the air. That might have been the last anyone saw of Nick alive if the rope he had snapped had not wrapped around his wrist as he waved his arms in the air. Pax hobbled and crawled as best he could to the foredeck and pulled in desperation on the rope, dragging Nick to the surface. He managed to reach down and grab his hair long enough to keep his face out of the water until help arrived. A boatman walking on the hull of a barge from a dinghy fished him out.
âYou grabbed his hair?â asked Thea, looking inquiringly at Nick. Nick nodded morosely and took off his deerstalker. There was a bare patch the size of Paxâs fist in the middle of his transplant.
âYou poor darlings,â she said.
Pax reached out for her hand and she kissed him on the forehead, the Judas kiss of a hostile woman.
